Mech/Elec ALS Lesson Five - Electrical Systems: Meters and Emergency Power Sources

Mech/Elec ALS Lesson Five - Electrical Systems: Meters and Emergency Power Sources

Meters
Used to measure electricity usage in kilowatt hours (kwh)
Residential = total consumption is measured
Commercial = Consumption is measured as well as the "peak demand"
demand surcharge = monetary charge associated with the peak demand, implemented to encourage reduced peak demands
high peak demands require utilities to build more facilities to meet that need but then sits idle in off hours, very inefficient.

Emergency Power Sources
Required for lighting exit passages and exit signs.
Hospitals require life support equipment and operation room equip. to be on emergency power.
Elevators and other equip. may also me backed up.

Light backup power = batteries continuously recharged while power on, take over when power lost.
typically 12 volt, fluorescent lamps require a power conversion.

Diesel generator = provides backup power for larger equip., has automatic starting switch.
auto transfer switch usually in equip. room
two our supply of fuel min.
