Common elements of each system: flat plate or focusing collectors, rock bed, fluid container, or battery storage devices.
Sometimes existing utility network is used as storage device.
Flat plate collector = a flat surface tilted at approximately the right ALT and AZ angles to receive the most sun rays as directly as possible.
Focusing collector = Parabolic trough or dish, lenses are arranged which focuses incoming light onto a tube or point.
higher energy and higher temp than flat plate. Must be aimed more carefully. Not conducive to cloudy weather.
Most effective when mounted on a motorized tracking pole that follows the sun's path.
