Mech/Elec ALS Lesson Two - Comfort Climate and Solar Design: Indirect Gain Space, Greenhouse and Super Insulated

Indirect Gain Space
Similar to direct gain but the sun does not directly heat the thermal mass materials, instead it is heated indirectly by reflective light or the warmed air.

Diffusing glass can be used to redirect the light and spread it around more.

Indirect requires about four times as much thermal mass as a direct gain space.

Greenhouse
Common and simple application, add a greenhouse connected to a living space.

A fan connected to a temp. sensing device moves the air from the greenhouse into the space when the desired temp. differentials are attained.

Requires an exhaust fan if the greenhouse overheats.

Super Insulated
Use of large amounts or insulation consisting of R-20 walls and R-30 roofs, seams on vapor barriers taped and gaps between window frames and wall are foam filled.

No pipes or conduits in exterior walls

Electrical wiring, switches and sockets typically mounted on the room SURFACE of the wall in a conduit chase instead of penetrating the wall.
