Mech/Elec ALS Lesson Two - Comfort Climate and Solar Design: Trombe and Water Walls

Trombe Walls
Type of mass wall, named after a Frenchman, Felix Trombe who popularized the technique.

Convective loop = the wall traps a layer of air between the wall and the external glass skin. When the air heats up it rises through a one way vent at the top of the wall allowing warm air into the room. Another one way vent is at the bottom of the wall allowing cold air to leave the room and enter the trombe wall air space.

This wall is an example of thermosiphoning

Water Walls
Type of mass wall, which consists of a tank or a collection of large vertical tubes filled with water placed next to a window inside the building.

tubes may be clear or colored. May allow some of the light into the room.

Water has an extremely high specific heat. It stores about five times as much heat per degree change per pound as concrete does. (two to three times as much per cubic foot)

Helps mitigate temp. fluctuation within the room.
